The MultiSport Centre of Excellence Foundation is supported by a wide range of community leaders, accomplished athletes, sport medical practitioners and dynamic business people who share in our vision.

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors, headed by our founding chair Scott Cousens of Vancouver.

Scott Cousens, Chair
Vancouver, B.C.

Scott Cousens provides management, technical and financial services to nine publicly traded corporations as the director of capital finance for Hunter Dickinson Inc. For the past 19 years he has worked developing relationships within the international investment community. Substantial financings and subsequent corporate success has enabled him to establish strong ties with North American, European and Asian investors.

As a principal of Hunter Dickinson, Mr. Cousens was one of the 2004 recipients of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Pacific Awards. He had a promising athletic career cut short by a series of serious injuries, and his success with Hunter Dickinson now enables him to help create a sport training facility that he wished he could have had access to years ago.

 

Loyal P. Makaroff - President & CEO, MultiSport Centre of Excellence

Loyal Makaroff has 16 years of successfully developing and enhancing new and existing businesses both nationally and internationally through his own company, Loyal Makaroff & Associates Inc. He has held contracts as a business development specialist with financial corporations, development organizations, universities, and governments. Mr. Makaroff also has 11 years of experience in senior administrative positions with not-for profit organizations. In both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors he has a consistent record of enhancing profitability and performance. His experience in strategic management, human resources, entrepreneurial expansion will enable him to effectively lead the MultiSport Centre of Excellence.

Dr. Jack Taunton

- Chief Medical Officer for Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
- Head Physician for the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies and CMO for Canada at the Sydney Olympics, two Pan-American and two World Student Games, with more than 25 years of experience providing medical support for Canadian national and professional sports teams and athletes.

Rick Celebrini

- Manager Medical Services and Chief Therapist for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
- Former professional soccer player and globally-recognized sports and orthopedic physiotherapist
- Works with professional athletes, including former two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash Therapist and consultant with Canadian Alpine Ski team, Canadian Soccer Association, Dallas Mavericks and NHL Players Association

Lynda Cannell

- President & CEO of SportMedBC for 27 years
- Leader in the development and delivery of a series of sport safety and training programs, including the highly-regarded Sun Run In Training clinics based on the SportMed RunWalk curriculum
- Medical Coordinator and Medical Director serving Canadian teams and athletes at numerous international events, including the Olympic Games

Rob Williams

- Founder of Performance Posture multi-disciplinary posture clinic, and Mixx Fitness Studio, an elite private training facility in Vancouver; exclusive service provider to Vancouver Club
- Leading posture specialist and movement coach with 20 years of professional experience
- Proponent of 'human performance' recognized as community leader on the strength of his focus on importance of posture for children

Dr. Christopher MacLean

Dr. MacLean has a Master of Science (Human Kinetics) at the University of British Columbia and a Ph.D. (Biomechanics) from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research efforts over the past several years have focused on mechanism of orthopaedic (overuse and traumatic) injuries and on the influence of footwear and exercise interventions. In industry, he has been involved in the prescription foot orthotic industry for the past 18 years and is currently the Director of Biomechanics at Paris Orthotics Lab Division, Vancouver BC.

Dr. Bruce Forster

Dr. Bruce Forster is Professor and Head at the University of BC Dept of Radiology, Head of Diagnostic Imaging, Vancouver Coastal Region, and Director of Medical Imaging at Vancouver General and UBC Hospitals. He was recently Director of Diagnostic Imaging for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics/Paralympics Games. As an Associate Member of the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre, he has been involved in the clinical, education, and research aspects of sports imaging for 17 years, is Associate Editor of the journals 'Radiology' and 'British Journal of Sports Medicine', and is on the Honorary Editorial Board of 'Open Access Journal of Sports Medicine'. He is the author of over 80 peer-reviewed scientific publications, and 90 educational exhibits, and has served as President of the Pacific Northwest Radiology Society, and on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Radiologists.

Lynn Furlotte

Lynn Furlotte is a co-founder of the Specialist Referral Clinic, where she currently serves as its Executive Director. She joins the Business Advisory Board of the MultiSport Centre of Excellence Foundation on the strength of more than a decade of marketing and business leadership for the Cambie Surgery Centre and Specialist Referral Clinic, recognized as two of the foremost and innovative private clinics in Canada. After being first contracted by Cambie Surgery Centre in 2000, Furlotte worked with former Canadian Medical Association President Dr. Brian Day and their colleagues in 2002 to help found Specialist Referral Clinic, which was the first of its kind in the country. She attended the Supreme Court hearings around the Chaoulli case - an important milestone in Canadian healthcare history -- and participated in the organization and marketing of Canada's first international health care debate conference. Furlotte continues to work in a consultative capacity with various health care companies and other organizations by assisting with business development and the design and development of marketing materials and websites. Her passion for sport and sport medicine is reflected in her own active lifestyle, one first honed when she served as trainer for the University of Western Ontario varsity rugby team. She graduated in Kinesiology from UWO and has spent most of her career in the health care industry focused on sports medicine. Her entry into the sector was in capital equipment sales with Nor-am Patient Care in Ontario, where she became National Sales Manager.

Peter J.G. Bentley – Chairman Emeritus, CANFOR

Mr. Bentley is chairman of the Board of Directors of CANFOR and of the company's principal subsidiary, Canadian Forest Products Ltd. ("CFP"), and co-chairman and a director of HSPP General Partner Ltd., the general partner of Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Limited Partnership.

He also serves as president and a director of Sierra Mountain Minerals Inc. and is a member of the board of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, as well as being a member of the Advisory Board of BuildDirect.com and a trustee and Chair Emeritus of the Vancouver General Hospital and University of British Columbia Hospital Foundation.

Mr. Bentley is Chancellor of the University of Northern British Columbia and holds an honourary law degree from the University of British Columbia.

Mr. Bentley received the WAC Bennett Award in 1999 when inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame. Highlights of his involvement with sport in British Columbia include serving as a director and past president of the BC Golf Association, honorary director of the Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association and a trustee of the Canadian Golf Foundation. Mr. Bentley was also a member of an influential group of individuals who brought NHL hockey to Vancouver and has chaired events to raise funds for Canada’s Olympic athletes.

Thanks to his unwavering passion for sport, as a participant, fan, campaigner and administrator,Mr. Bentley has benefited all British Columbians and brought recognition and honour to the province’s sport

Ronald W Thiessen, CA - President, C.E.O. and Director of Hunter Dickenson Inc.

Ron brings a unique set of skills to the MultiSport Centre of Excellence Business Advisory Board. In his early years he specialized in taxation and corporate structuring, re-structuring and financing. Later he re-concentrated his efforts toward the development of venture capital financing for emerging public and private companies, including mineral exploration companies. During his time at HDI, he and his associates have completed in excess of 20 property or project acquisitions and over $350 million in exploration financings.

Another of Ron's specialties is structuring creative deals and developing strategic alliances. These creative deals extend from finding ways to work with South African firms to meet the requirements of the new mining laws, to developing innovative approaches to business partnerships with a Black Economic Empowerment Company.

Ron lives in West Vancouver, British Columbia, with his wife Shannon and their two daughters. He enjoys golfing, skiing and collecting automobiles.

Blake Bromley - President of Benefic Group.

Blake Bromley’s (BA, LLB) benevolent sector expertise may be unparalleled in Canada. He is an authority on Canadian charity law and as a President of Benefic Group his practice relates almost exclusively to charitable and tax planning matters.

Mr. Bromley has incorporated and registered well over 500 registered charities and non-profit organizations and has provided strategic tax planning to facilitate over one billion dollars worth of inter-vivos gifting plus several times that in future testamentary giving. He is also a globally recognized expert on the comparative law of charity and regularly advises charities and donors operating around the world on tax and legal issues relating to the international transfer and utilization of charitable funds as well as on matters of corporate control, strategy, and structure.

Mr. Bromley has advised governments in China, Russia,Vietnam, Australia, England, South Africa and Eastern Europe on drafting their laws governing rights and tax privileges of social organizations.

Melanie Clarance - Senior Vice President for EFG Wealth Management (Canada) Ltd.

In her role, she facilitates Private Swiss Banking, Global Asset Management and Investment Banking for High Net Worth individuals and institutions. She is a connector and a rainmaker and has been involved in numerous community activities as well as being a part of many boards. An avid skier, tennis player, equestrian and soccer/lacrosse/tennis/hockey/gymnastics Mom, she has played or watched most every sport, enjoying them all.

Aside from finance and sport, Melanie has a strong interest in anatomy, physiology and rehabilitation as she holds both a Science and a DVM degree and still practices veterinary medicine part time.

Jeffery Mason

Mr. Mason articled with Deloitte & Touche, specializing in audit and business venture structuring, and subsequently worked with international commodity mercantilist trader, Balfour Guthrie Inc., the finance group at Simon Fraser University, and the Homestake Mining Group.

Joining Hunter Dickinson Inc. in 1994, as director of finance, accounting and human resources, Mr. Mason focused on creative acquisition opportunities and financing arrangements, along with building the accounting/ administration systems to the present day international operations. In August 1998, he became Chief Financial Officer of the Hunter Dickinson group of companies and has been instrumental in building HDI into a credible enterprise, able to raise substantial financings.

Mr. Mason, along with the other directors of HDI,was recognized as business innovators with the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2004 Pacific award in the Natural Resources category.

Tricia Smith – Partner at Barnescraig & Associates.

Tricia Smith (BA LLB LLD (Honorary)) is a four time Olympian, Olympic Silver Medalist, Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist, seven time World Championship Medalist in Rowing, and a member of the B.C. and Canadian Olympic Sport Halls of Fame. She is Vice President of the Canadian Olympic Committee, Executive Committee Member of the International Rowing Federation, and Member of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport.

She has received numerous awards including an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of British Columbia for her career and work in sport and the law. Recently she has been instrumental in lobbying for and raising 20 million dollars for the in-progress dredging and rejuvenation of the international standard rowing canoe and kayak course at Burnaby Lake.

In her professional career, Ms. Smith is Deputy Managing Director and a Partner at Barnescraig & Associates in Vancouver, British Columbia, a firm specializing in liability claims and risk management. Her practice also includes work as a Sport Arbitrator.
